Pathologists’ Assistant Job Details
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,710-$2,920
- Location: DeKalb, Illinois
- Healthcare Setting: Hospital laboratory and pathology department
- Start Date: October 26, 2026
- End Date: January 18, 2027
- Contract Duration: 12 weeks
- Schedule: 5 shifts per week
- Shift: 8-hour day shifts, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a 30-minute meal break
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: None
- Call: Not required
- Orientation: 8 hours
Pathologists’ Assistant Job Requirements
- At least 1 year of direct Pathologists’ Assistant experience in a hospital or pathology laboratory setting
- Master of Science degree
- Pathologists’ Assistant degree
- Current Pathologists’ Assistant certification through ASCP
- Illinois license in hand; emergency and pending licenses are not accepted
- Strong knowledge of surgical pathology specimen handling, gross examination, and laboratory safety practices
- Ability to meet required occupational health standards, including COVID-19 vaccination with medical exemptions only and annual influenza vaccination without exemptions
- Ability to provide a skills checklist and two professional references during the application process, including one recent supervisor, manager, or charge-level reference
Pathologists’ Assistant Responsibilities
- Perform professional Pathologists’ Assistant duties in a hospital-based pathology laboratory
- Receive, identify, examine, and gross surgical pathology specimens according to established protocols
- Prepare tissue specimens for processing while maintaining accurate labeling, documentation, and chain of custody
- Collaborate with pathologists, histology staff, laboratory leadership, and other members of the patient care team
- Support quality assurance, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, and safe laboratory practices
- Communicate specimen-related findings and workflow concerns promptly and professionally
- Maintain organized work areas and complete laboratory documentation in accordance with department standards
